Use Cases:
Server/Cluster Specification
Server Model:
Storage Enclosure:
Select the minimum and maximum amount of disk enclosures per cluster. For RAID10 we recommend 2x or more storage enclosures (JBODs) per cluster, RAIDZ2 3x JBODs or more, and for RAIDZ3 choose 4x or more. QuantaStor intelligently provisions Storage Pools to stripe across storage enclosures which in turn provides fault-tolerance and high-availability in the event of a disk enclosure power-outage or failure.
Data Device:
Write Log Devices / Pool:
Log devices boost write performance by committing a copy of all data writes to fast NVMe/SSD storage first which enables the system flush data out to HDD devices asynchronously and more efficiently in larger blocks.
Read Cache / Pool:
Read cache devices act as an SSD extension of the RAM based read cache. Usually the RAM based read cache is sufficient but some use cases like video playback can greatly benefit from the additional read cache capacity.
Metadata Offload / Pool:
Metadata offload devices serve as storage for pointers used to locate data blocks on the drives.
RAM/Capacity Ratio:
Our general recommendation is to have a 1:1 ratio where a GB of RAM is added to the server for each TB of usable capacity. For most backup and archive configurations the required RAM requirements are lower and a reduced ratio may be used.
Pools/Cluster:
Select the number of pools each cluster is to be divided up into.
Servers/Cluster:
Select the number of servers per high-availability cluster, choose single server for non-HA configurations.

Data Compression (%):
Compression % indicates the amount of additional usable capacity is gained due to data compression. If the data is pre-compressed such as images, video or pre-encrypted files set this to 0%.
Reserved Capacity (%):
Reserved free-space should be at least 10% to avoid performance degradation as the system reaches its maximum designed capacity. Lower amounts such as 5% are acceptible for archive configurations. Systems configured for database and virtualization use cases should account for a 20% or larger free space overhead to ensure no loss of performance.
Reserved Drive Slots (%):
Reserved drive slots indicates the percentage of drive bays per cluster to remain empty for future expansion. This is helpful for starting the cluster with a larger number of servers that are partially populated.
